The Government of Bangladesh has made it mandatory for all private recruiting agencies to hire workers to be sent abroad from an official database of registered migrant workers.

The first batch of Bangladeshi workers is set to fly to Malaysia this afternoon (Thursday)for the first time under state arrangements.

Pre-departure briefings for migrant workers, which are organised by the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) in order to give migrants relevant information on their destination, see little turnout despite attendance being mandatory by the government.

Visas for the Hong Kong-bound female migrant workers have reached Bangladesh authorities and they will be sent onward this month.

Aspirant workers, set to fly to Malaysia on April 25, will now have to pay nearly Tk7,500 less than their actual plane fare.

The government has failed to encourage female job seekers to register online for overseas positions, as it did not wage an effective campaign to this end, say migration experts.

About 30 migrant workers, mainly Bangladeshi, have been wounded in a shooting on a strawberry farm in Greece after requesting salaries that had not been paid, according to reports.

A total of 5,384 enthusiastic jobseeker women completed online registrations for getting jobs abroad as the five-day registration process ended on Thursday in all the eight districts under Rangpur division, reports BSS.
