Overseas Filipino workers may soon benefit from the government's universal health program as the Department of Health readies a program addressing the issue of migrant health.

MANILA, Philippines - An international migrant rights group on Thursday called on the Saudi Arabian government to immediately stop the crackdown of migrant workers in the country as part of its full implementation of the nitaqat, or Saudization or localization of labor.

The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh said 11 out of the 110 examinees  passed the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration’s (OWWA’s) Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) examination.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday said it is verifying reports that 30 Filipinos were arrested in the ongoing illegal migrant crackdown in Saudi Arabia.

Organisers of a petition, endorsed by more than 100 community organisations in Hong Kong, said it was the reason why a society representing domestic helper agencies in the Philippines last week lifted a ban on sending workers to Hong Kong, a report said.

About 7,000 Filipinos were stranded while awaiting repatriation from Saudi Arabia following a crackdown on undocumented migrant workers as part of the government’s “Saudization” program, a Filipino migrant rights group said on Monday.

The Philippine government will provide the necessary assistance to undocumented Filipinos who may be arrested in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing crackdown on illegal workers, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday.
