Employment permit systems which discriminate against migrant workers should be reviewed, an international labor leader said.

"Permit systems need to be carefully examined so that they meet the principles of non-discrimination and do not leave migrant workers in situations such as the terrible case of the Nepalese worker," International Labor Organization (ILO) Director-General Guy Ryder told reporters in an interview in Seoul, Wednesday.

"There are restrictions when a worker is tied to an employer _ you have a problem," he said.

Ryder was referring to the suicide last month of a Nepalese migrant worker in Korea, who suffered from harsh working conditions, but was unable to find new work due to a regulation under the Employment Permit System, which requires the employer's consent for an employee to seek a new job.
